GEO Explained: How to Get Your Website Cited by ChatGPT and AI Search

Updated July 2026 · 8 min read

A buyer looking for a supplier used to open Google and scan ten blue links. Increasingly, they open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask a question in plain language: “Who makes OEM knee braces in China with low MOQ?” They read one generated answer, and contact the two or three companies named in it.

If your company is not in that answer, you were never in the running — and unlike a search result, there is no page two to be found on.

Getting into those answers is what GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — means. This guide covers what actually determines whether an AI can find you, understand you, and quote you correctly.

Why most exporter websites are invisible to AI

It is rarely a design problem. Sites that look excellent are routinely invisible, for four concrete reasons:

ReasonWhat it looks like
AI crawlers are blockedrobots.txt disallows GPTBot / ClaudeBot / PerplexityBot — often by a default template nobody reviewed
No machine-readable identityThe site never states in structured form what the company is, where it is, or what it sells — the model has to guess from slogans
Nothing answer-shapedMarketing copy (“world-class quality”) cannot be quoted; specific answers (“MOQ from 500 pieces, ISO 9001, ships from Ningbo”) can
Never registeredThe site was never submitted to Search Console or Bing, so indexing crawls at its own pace — and Bing’s index feeds ChatGPT search

The four things that actually make a site citable

1. Let the AI crawlers in — explicitly

Add allow rules for the crawlers that matter: GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT), ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended (Gemini) and Applebot-Extended. This costs nothing, takes one file, and is the single most common reason a company is absent from AI answers.

2. Publish an llms.txt company profile

A plain-text file at your domain root that states, without marketing language: what the company is, what it makes, capacity and certifications, markets served, languages spoken, and how to get in touch. Think of it as the briefing note you would hand a new salesperson — written so a model can quote it verbatim and get your facts right.

3. Add structured data (JSON-LD)

Machine-readable markup that states your organization, services, products and FAQs in a standard vocabulary (schema.org). This is what turns “we think this page is about a manufacturer” into “this is a manufacturer, in this city, with these certifications.” It also unlocks rich results in ordinary Google search — the same work pays twice.

4. Encode real questions and real answers

Write down the questions buyers actually ask — minimum order quantity, lead time, certifications, payment terms, sample policy — and answer them specifically on the page, then mark them up as FAQ structured data. Question-and-answer content is the format AI assistants quote most readily, because it maps directly onto how buyers ask.

What GEO is not

It is not keyword stuffing, and it is not writing for robots. Every item above makes the site more useful to human buyers as well: honest specifics instead of adjectives, clear contact facts, real answers to real questions. If a change would only ever help a machine, it is not GEO — it is spam, and models discount it.

How to check where you stand

Before optimizing anything, find out what is actually broken. The fastest way is to run your domain through a checker that inspects the specific signals above — crawler permissions, llms.txt, structured data, share metadata and technical health.

We built a free one: run a 30-second AI-visibility check on your site. It scores 24 items across five categories and tells you, item by item, what is missing and how to fix it. No signup.

Doing it yourself vs having it done

Everything in this guide is doable in-house if someone owns it: a robots.txt edit, an llms.txt file, JSON-LD on each page, an FAQ block, and registration with Google Search Console and Bing. Budget a focused day or two per site, plus verification.

If you would rather it were simply done — including the official Google and Bing registration and a written report of what changed — that is the service we run for exporters. Either way, start by measuring: you cannot fix invisibility you have not looked at.

2. 发布 llms.txt 企业档案
